  • The Newton High School boys’ soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid, stopping Campus 2-0. The game was physical and got a little chippy in the second half. The Railers outshot Campus 12-1, with the sole Colt shot coming on a set piece late in the first half. “The mood, the energy tonight was a lot different during warm-up,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “It felt good. We played exactly what we wanted to do. We worked in a lot of different combinations and seemed to be working. Our team was communicating. They were moving off the ball. In the second half, we continued, but we shied away from what was working, We have to be careful that we don’t fall back into old patterns.” The Railers improve to 7-4, 1-2 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. Campus falls to 2-8, 0-4 in Division I play. The Railers dominated play in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead. Lance Woodward scored both goals for Newton. “It wasn’t just me,” Woodward said. “We had great runs and we had great passes. That’s something we’ve needed to work on was our passing. It just came out before the game started. The coach said he felt a different energy. Ever since the coach made that comment, we played well.” “He’s a midfielder, and I’ve talked to the flanks on being able to break inside and get that shot off,” Jantzi said. “He found the back of the net.” Newton had several scoring chances in the second half. Campus also had some charges forward, but couldn’t pull the trigger. Nat Dick claimed the shutout win with one save. Connor Patterson had seven saves for the Colts. Newton plays traditional Class 6A power at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the road, followed by Hutchinson Thursday at home. “It was a much needed win because of the two-game skid we were in,” Jantzi said. “Tuesday’s going to be a tough one. They’re traditionally a big name. If we continue to play and put two halves together, we can compete with them.” JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity topped Campus 5-0. Juan Castillo scored two goals for Newton. Cesar Sanchez, Irwin Ramos and Olvin Romero each scored goals. Romero, Ramos and Tyler Cornejo each added an assist. Edgar Dominguez and Adolfo Ibarra each spent a half in goal.Campus 0 0 —0 Newton 2 0 —2 1. N Lance Woodward (unassisted) 2:02 2. N 1.
