  • HARVEY COUNTY EAST PARK — The Berean Academy girls’ cross country team placed second and the Hesston boys took second Thursday at the Berean Academy Invitational at Harvey County East Park. The meet drew 13 schools. In the boys’ competition, Mulvane claimed five of the first six places to win the team score with 18 points, three shy of a perfect score. Hesston was second with 61, followed by Andover at 108. Berean Academy was fourth, Burrton was seventh, Goessel was eighth and Remington was ninth. In the girls’ team competition, Wichita Trinity Academy won with 41 points, followed by Berean Academy at 50. Hesston and Rosalia Flinhills each scored 99 points, but Hesston took third on the sixth-runner tie-breaker. Remington was eighth. “They ran really well,” Hesston coach Nealee Johnston said. “Of all our runners, almost everyone improved their times from last year. That’s amazing. The weather was nice, which was good for the runners. We’ve been getting second at this meet for a couple of years now, and Mulvane has won it. Our goal wasn’t necessarily to win it, but to run our best.” “We did a really good job today,” Berean Academy coach Mark Anderson said. “It’s our home course and the kids wanted to do a good job. The competition was really strong today. There were a lot of good runners and good times. We had good weather, we thank the good Lord for that.” Emily Sechrist of Hillsboro won the girls’ race in 15:30.6, followed by Elise Larson of Andover in second at 15:33.7 and Mikala Heddin of Hesston in third at 15:59.4. Other area medalists include Wendy Busenitz of Berean Academy in fourth, Emily Wiebe of Berean Academy in 11th, Tiffany Wiebe of Berean Academy in 12th, Janet Busenitz of Berean Academy in 14th, Megan Baumgartner of Hesston in 16th, Carissa Schlabach of Berean Academy in 18th and Katelyn Entz of Berean Academy in 20th. In the boys’ race, Ren Bean of Mulvane won in 15:18.9, followed by teammate Miles Hilger in second in 16:23.4. Drew Hageman of Hesston broke up Mulvane’s attempt at a clean sweep, taking third in 16:28.9. Other area medalists include Trae Lane of Burrton in eighth, Matthew Wine of Berean Academy in 10th, Peter Jensen of Hesston in 11th, Austin Bollinger of Hesston in 13th, Micah Klaassen of Berean Academy in 16th, Kameron Johnson of Hesston in 17th and Caleb Hurst of Burrton in 18th. “(Hageman) is a senior,” Johnston said. “He’s been improving every year since he was a freshman. I think we’re sitting real well. We’re peaking at the right time. I think we’re ready to surprise people.” Hesston has the Ellsworth Invitational Tuesday. Berean runs Thursday at the Circle Invitational. Remington runs Tuesday at Eureka. Burrton and Goessel travel to Harvey County West Park Thursday for the Burrton Invitational. Hesston, Berean and Remington have league meets Oct. 11. “We need to try and keep injury free,” Anderson said. “We’ve done a pretty good job of that. We just need to get a little more strong and more efficient. I’m very pleased.”
