HUTCHINSON — The Newton United ’03 U-10 boys’ soccer team won the silver division of the 2012 Club Azzurri Fall Classic Saturday and Sunday in Hutchinson. In pool play, United downed the Salina Phoenix 5-0, the Wichita Wings 4-2 and the Wichita Wizards 2-0. In the championship game, United downed the Salina Phoenix 5-3.
It was the first title for the team. The ’03 United played in two tournaments last spring — the Midwest Mother’s Day Classic in Overland Park and the Mel Hambelton Cup. The team will be playing in the EFC Fall Invitational Oct. 6 through 8. The team plays in the Sedgwick County Soccer Association. The team is coached by Brian Ebert, assisted by Carlos Fernandez and Marco Valdivia. Newton United was formed in 2009. United also fields a U-5/6, U-9, U-12 and U-13 teams.
