LAWRENCE — The Newton High School cross country teams competed at a pair of meets in recent days.?Saturday, the Railer girls placed 25th and the Railer boys placed 41st in the Crimson Division of the the Rim Rock Classic at the University of Kansas’ Rim Rock Farms in rural Lawrence.?In the girls’ Crimson division, Maize South won at 122, followed by Olathe North at 150, Valley Center at 174, Chaparral at 227 and Ozark (Mo.) at 257. Newton had 552 points. There were 35 teams that scored.?For the Railer girls, Ashlyn Glann was 68th in 17:14.40 (4,000 meters), followed by Kasey Stucky in 77th in 17:18.10, Sadie Winter in 84th in 17:19.30, Elyse Bergquist in 154th at 18:10.20, Kelsi Langley in 186th in 18:36.40; Alexa Anderson in 231st at 20:03.00; and Alicia Garcia in 237th at 21:13.70.?There were 238 runners in the race.?In the boys’ Crimson division, Wamego won at 164, followed by Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 181, Dodge City at 210, Mulvane at 273 and Staley (Mo.) at 280. Newton scored 1,063 points. There were 43 schools scoring.?For the Railer boys, Corey Helsper was 177th in 18:23.60 (5,000 meters), followed by Joey Greene in 191st in 18:30.70, Cody Mick in 225th in 18:53.30, Thomas Kelso in 239th in 19:05.60, Jack Polley in 241st in 19:06.20, Jacey Friesen in 242nd in 19:06.50 and Alfredo Fields in 276th in 19:57.10.?There were 295 runners in the race.?Thursday at the McPherson Invitational at the Rolling Acres Golf Course, the Railer boys were sixth out of nine teams. Buhler won at 44, followed by Maize South at 58, Hutchinson at 69, McPherson at 95 and El Dorado at 155. Newton had 217 points.?Kendell Gaeddert was 25th at 19:35.40, followed by Brennan Miller in 27th at 19:42.20, Andre Rocha in 33rd at 20:11.50, Luke Reed in 37th in 20:17.40 and Justice Grant in 38th in 20:24.40.?The Newton girls didn’t have enough runners to score.
