Helen H. Manes, 78, died on Friday (Sept. 21, 2012) at Newton Medical Center. She was born on March 8, 1934, in Wichita to Frank Nelson and Elveta Harriett (Thompson) Jordan. On Sept. 13, 1953, she married James W. Manes in Wichita, and he survives of the home. Helen was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Newton. She was a former supervisor of the teen and youth department in the church. Helen also was a Girl Scout leader. She worked as a secretary for the Penn Mutual Insurance Co. and for the president of the Halstead State Bank. Helen was an office manager and bookkeeper for her husband at Bud and Steve’s in Newton. She enjoyed sewing, needlework and reading. Helen enjoyed spending time with her loving family and many friends. She is survived by her husband, James of the home; son, James David and his wife, Ellen of Homewood, Ill.; daughters, Judith Kay and her husband, Patrick Weyrauch of Manhattan, and Patricia Ann and her husband, Randall Turner of Hutchinson; brother, John Jordon of Colorado; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Lois Carpenter. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 27, 2012) at First Church of the Nazarene in Newton, with the Rev. Charles West presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton. Memorials are suggested to First Church of the Nazarene or Hospice Care of Kansas Children’s Bereavement Camp, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
