  •  By Chad FreyNewton KansanSEDGWICK — Friday night was an early clash of the titans — the Sedgwick Cardinals had outscored their previous opponents 80-13, and played host to a Salina Sacred Heart team which had outscored their first two opponents 119-12.Something had to give — and that something was Sedgwick execution in a 31-28 overtime loss.“They executed really well in the first half and took away what we do offensively,” said coach Jeff Werner. “We were able to make some plays in the second half. We dropped some passes early in the game and didn’t get going. We dug ourselves a hole early.”Both offenses struggled early — those high-scoring attacks from the first two games combined for just 13 points in the first half. The fireworks began in the second half — when Sacred Heart punched in two early scores — only to see Sedgwick come back with a pair of scores to set the score at 21-20 in favor of the Knights entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth stanza Sedgwick wide receiver Logan Thompson put on quite a show, knotting the score at 28 with an 86 yard touchdown reception with 5:35 left. With about a minute left on the clock, he hauled in another 80 yard pass — one that appeared to be what could have been a game winning touchdown but was ruled a fumble. Sacred Heart recovered in the endzone, setting up overtime.Sedgwick was unable to move the ball effectively in their offensive possession, and Sacred Heart chose to try and end the game after running just one play on offense — electing for a 25-yard field goal by Tymony Bonilla that gave the Knights the win.“We need to learn and play like we did in the second half,” Werner said. “We came from two scores down to tie the game, and that’s a positive. Our guys did that, and if we play with that intensity in the next game I think we will be OK.”Next up for the Cardinals will be a home game against Ell-Saline. Ell-Saline is 3-0 with wins over Marion, Remington and Moundridge.SSH 7 0 14 7 3 31SED 0 6 14 8 0 28Scoring summaryFirst quarter:26 Sacred Heart — Wuthnow to Richards, 10 yd pass.
