  •  Monday those who walk or fish along Sand Creek might have received a little bit a shock —?there was no water in the creek.?The creek is dry, and will be for several months, as Dondlinger Construction works to rebuild a bridge over the creek on Ash?Street.?The dam which holds water in Sand Creek was lowered Sunday night.?“The dam will be down for five or six months, that is the estimate,” said Erin McDaniel, public information officer for the city of Newton.?The Ash Street bridge improvement project will cost an estimated $1.1 million. Bid letting was in July. The city will pay $274,000 of those costs, the state will pay the remaining costs. The project is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2013.?Ash Street was closed June 27 between Eighth and Ninth Streets.?In addition to a rebuild of the bridge, Ash?Street was under construction to rebuild a sagging sewer line. Cost of the project was estimated at more than $31,500.
