Jason Mitchell, chair of the Harvey County Republican Party, said all community members are invited to the annual ice cream social and candidate forum.
Politicians planning on attending include Gary Mason (R-Valley Center) and Carolyn McGinn (R-Sedgwick), running for the state senate district 31 seat; Randy Hague (R-Newton) and Marge Roberson (R-Newton), running for the county commission district No. 2 seat; and William Ewert (R-Halstead), Lenny Wild (R-Newton) and Ron Krehbiel (R-Burrton), running for the county commission district No. 3 seat.
“They’ve all committed to coming,” Mitchell said.
County commission candidates each will be given a few minutes to speak about themselves, and then there will be a “question and answer” session. Voters will be able to write down questions for candidates on note cards, which will be read aloud.
Senate candidates will go through a similar process.
Mitchell said you don’t have to be a member of the Republican Party in order to attend and ask candidates questions.
“They’re pretty hotly contested (races),” he said. “... We encourage all to attend and get to know the candidates. ... The more people who are active, the better the government is.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
