A Chanute-based bank, Community National Bank & Trust, soon will be expanding to Newton.
The bank has applied for a charter to open a full-service branch in Newton, offering services such as CDs, checking accounts and commercial and consumer loans.
“We are terrifically excited to be entering the Newton market,” said Dwight Ray, who will serve as president of the Newton branch. “... We’re hoping to be a very valued addition to the community.”
The bank will open a temporary loan production office July 30 in the Old Mill Plaza at 301 N. Main St., Suite 101. They will expand their range of services after they receive the charter, which Ray anticipates having by the end of the year.
The bank eventually plans to construct a separate branch location. Property for the branch has been acquired but the exact location has not yet been released to the press.
Ray said the branch will be a new brick and limestone structure, and he thinks it will be an asset to the community.
“It’s a wonderful location,” he said. “It will be a great addition.”
Ray said he is excited about the bank’s ability to offer commercial leasing services (a lease for property used for business purposes) to customers — a service he said is not offered at many banks.
Community National Bank & Trust started 25 years ago in Chanute and has since expanded to locations such as El Dorado, Winfield and Benton. Newton will be the bank’s westernmost location, and Ray said the business plans to continue expanding to the west in the future.
Although Ray had intended to retire before he heard about the Community National Bank & Trust branch in Newton, he said it was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.
“(There’s) just incredible people, (it’s) just a wonderful bank,” he said.
The office’s phone number will be 283-0059.
