It was a good day for Halstead junior Cory Armendariz Thursday at the Sedgwick Invitational Thursday at the Newton Public Golf Course.

Armendariz shot a five-over par 75 to claim a second-place medal at the eight-team event.

Caleb Brening of Hutchinson Trinity claimed top medalist honors with a 78. Elliott Money of host Sedgwick was third at 78, followed by Shane Goerzen of Goessel in fourth at 79 and Halstead’s Taylor Nemeth in fifth at 79.

“I started off pretty slow, but I got in a rhthym and started going,” Armendariz said. “That’s my best in a tournament this year.”

Armendariz was a state qualifier last year.

“I shot an 81, and I was just a couple strokes off a medal,” he said. “I just need to keep shooting in the 70s.”

Hutchinson Trinity won the team title at 333, one stroke better than Pretty Prairie. Remington was five strokes off the team lead at 338, followed by Halstead at 339, Sedgwick at 342, Leon-Bluestem at 353, Goessel at 357 and Peabody-Burns at 450.
