The Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store in Newton is receiving more than just a make-over: The restaurant is getting a whole new building.
The company has been fixing up some of its newer stores but decided it would be easier to start from scratch on the Newton location, which is the second oldest store in Kansas.
Newton’s new Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store is scheduled to open on May 7. The new store is located 4 1⁄2 feet from the older location at 1209 E. First St.
On March 25, the original store (built in 1982) was torn down to make way for a new parking lot.
“We really liked that store location so we bought the property adjacent to it so we could build a bigger, better store,” said Drew Braum, president and CEO. “My family and I worked on this store design for several years. We wanted it to have a warm, home-like feeling with all of the amenities. Over the years, Newton has been so supportive — we really hope they like the new store.”
The “W” store model is 5,756 square feet with a stacked stone exterior and double drive thru window. The interior features open beamed ceilings, tile flooring, track and pendant lights. The dining room seats 86 guests with brightly colored tables and booths.
The store has the traditional fountain area for ice cream, and grill area for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but according to Braum, the Fresh Market will be one of the most exciting changes in the store’s design.
“We wanted the Fresh Market to be large enough to accommodate all the products that we offer from our full lines of dairy and bakery to fresh meats, fruits and vegetables. We also wanted it to be ‘customer friendly,’ so we added double checkout counters, automatic doors and wider aisles,” Braum said.
Because of its size, the new store will require more employees to operate, which means increased job opportunities in Newton. Approximately 65 employees are needed to run a “W” store model.
Bill and Mary Braum opened their first Braum’s store in Oklahoma City in 1968, and the company continues to be family owned and operated.
There are 280 Braum’s stores throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas.
