The Newton High School wrestling team competed in its final tournament of the regular season, taking second Friday and Saturday at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City.


The Newton High School wrestling team competed in its final tournament of the regular season, taking second Friday and Saturday at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City.

The Railers claimed two titles at the 28-team tournament.

Arkansas City won the tournament with 194.5 points, followed by Newton at 169.5, Pine Creek, Colo., at 160.5, Andale at 144, Ponderosa, Colo., at 123, Emporia at 122.5, Roosevelt, Colo., at 113, Cleveland, N.M., at 103.5, Garden City at 99.5 and Bear Creek, Colo., at 98.

Newton claimed eight medals out of 13 wrestlers.

Miles Johns won the title at 145 pounds, finishing 4-0. Johns decisioned John Lewis of Ponderosa, Colo., 3-0 in the championship match. Johns improves to 28-2.

Dillon Archer won the title at 195 pounds, finishing 4-0. Archer downed Bradon Tribble of Pine Creek, Colo., 9-3 in the finals. Archer improves to 23-3.

At 132 pounds, Anthony Monares finished fourth at 5-2. Monares lost in the first round and won five straight before falling in the consolation finals. Hugh McConnell finished fourth at 182 pounds at 3-2. Raymond Gallegos finished fourth at 220 pounds at 3-2. Garrett Lee finished 3-2 at heavyweight to place fourth.

At 120 pounds, Quinton Harrison finished 4-2 to take fifth. Jared Langley finished 3-3 at 170 pounds to place sixth.

Ryan Hutton finished 3-2 at 160 pounds. At 138 pounds, Garrett McEachern finished 2-2. Heydon Mock finished 2-2 at 152 pounds.

At 126 pounds, Gabe Torres finished 1-2.

At 113 pounds, Earnest Johns finished 0-2.

Newton was open at 106 pounds.

Newton hosts Salina Central in a dual meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ravenscroft Gym. A Railer win locks up a share of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I title, Newton’s first league title in wrestling since the 1970s.
