The Newton High School girls’ basketball team will hold a free throw shooting contest as a benefit for former player Jaci Garver, who was seriously injured in a recent auto accident.

Tables will be set up at the Newton Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday, where patrons can sponsor an NHS girls’ player.

The contest will be held at a practice following the tournament. Each player will shoot 100 free throws.

Patrons can give a flat donation to the sponsored player.

“We really want to help that family,” Newton coach Randy Jordan said. “She’s been in all of our thoughts and prayers. It’s been a difficult time for her family. We want to do our part. She was a big part of our basketball team.”

Garver played for the Railers last season. Before that, she played for the Newton Panthers home school team.

This season, Garver began her freshman year as a reserve guard at Tabor College, playing in 12 games before getting injured.
