As city crews started delivering new single-stream recycling poly-carts to Newton residents this week, city commissioners approved a program that will give community members a chance to earn rewards for recycling.
The program will be offered free to the community for a two-year period, thanks to a grant from SC Johnson & Son Inc. and the organization Recyclebank. Each resident who logs into Recyclebank to report they recycled will earn points they can redeem for rewards, such as coupons and discounts.
“Their whole goal is to get people more aware of recycling,” Suzanne Loomis, city engineer/director of public works, said of the program.
One city has been chosen from each of the 50 states, and Newton was selected to represent Kansas. The cities will compete to see who can achieve the highest percentage of community members recycling, and the winner will receive a $100,000 grant to be used for a community environmental project.
