Each year hundreds of people get free tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at the Newton Public Library, and if something doesn’t change soon, they will have a long wait this year.
“We are down to five volunteers,” said Cleta Smith, who helps coordinate the program.
That’s three tax preparers and two greeters. Smith said the program would work best with eight tax preparers, more than double than what they have now.
“In my perfect world we’d have eight,” Smith said. “Everyone would work about twice a week.”
The program will start helping prepare taxes four days a week in February.
Smith said the standard training has already been done, but she will help anyone who is interested in volunteering get up to speed.
“We also need people to greet taxpayers and make sure they have all the information they need with them,” Smith said. “It can be for as little as three hours per week.”
