There only were a couple of changes noted for area schools in the Kansas State High School Activities Association classifications released Tuesday.A new formula was used this year to determine classifications. In the past, only the top three grades were counted for all sports except football. This year, all four grades were used based on the enrollment count taken Sept. 20.The only area school to change classification was Moundridge, which moved up to Class 3A after decades in Class 2A. Moundridge had an enrollment of 162, making it the smallest Class 3A school in the state.Newton (1,020) remains in Class 5A. Hesston (266) remains in Class 4A. Halstead (234), Hillsboro (181), Marion (181), Sedgwick (175) and Remington (163) all remain in Class 3A.Berean Academy (150) and Peabody-Burns (102) remain in Class 2A. Burrton (75), Goessel (80) and Centre (96) remain in Class 1A.Of the schools in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League, all of the schools in Division I, which includes Newton, remain in their current classification. In Division II, Goddard moves down to Class 5A from 6A, joined by its newly opened sister school Goddard Eisenhower, which also will be in Class 5A.After decades in Class 5A, McPherson will drop down to Class 4A. Winfield, which dropped to Class 4A last year, moved back to Class 5A.The new alignment for the next two years in the AV-CTL is expected to be released in the coming weeks.In the Central Kansas League, Kingman moved down to Class 3A and Sterling moved down to Class 2A.In the Heart of America League, Moundridge was the only school to change classification.In the Wheat State League, Little River moved up to Class 2A. No changes were reported in the Heart of the Plains League.Football uses the enrollment of ninth, 10th and 11th graders with the classification used for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The only changes for area schools is Moundridge will move up to Class 3A, Centre will move up to Eight-Man Division I and Goessel will move down to Eight-Man Division II.District assignments for the next two years are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
