The Newton High School gymnastics team is still short-handed, but the team is improving. The Railers took fourth Saturday at the five-team Free State Invitational in Lawrence.Free State won the meet at 102.55, followed by Shawnee Mission Northwest at 93.8, Lawrence at 83.4, Newton at 79.35 and Emporia at 77.55.“We added some difficulty and Haven added a new vault, so it helped, but we are still working and hoping to raise the value of some of the routines,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. “Alisha (LaFave) broke the top six with a season high and a sixth place and was the only place finisher, but Haven was close behind in the all-around with a season high and in seventh. I am proud of the improvements and the effort the girls are making to be competitive. We are still without Riley Roberts, and that will make a big difference in our team score.”Newton competes today at the Olathe North Invitational.
