The Newton High School cross country teams competed Saturday at the Rim Rock Classic at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence.

The meet drew more than 3,500 runners in three divisions. The Railers competed in the Crimson division with the boys finishing 22nd out of 35 teams and the girls finishing 25th out of 35 teams.

The Railer girls were led by Ashlyn Glann, who finished in 74th out of 230 runners in 17:09.16 (4,000 meters).

The Railer boys were led by Helam Hernandez, who finished 83rd out of 226 runners with a time of 18:02.36 (5,000 meters). Dilon Winter was 88th in 18:04.99.

“We were hoping to come back with some medals but just didn’t make it happen,” Newton coach Richard Mick said. “Ashlyn Glann ran 17:09 which is almost a two-minute improvement from the same meet last year. In fact, her time ranks 13th for Newton girl runners all-time on this course. Helam had a pretty significant improvement also. Collectively, we just didn’t run very well, and the team scores reflect that. We need to run smarter and with more confidence. We’ll bounce back. We have our home meet this Saturday and the experience gained at Rim Rock should help us down the road.”

Newton hosts the 12-team Newton Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday at Centennial Park.
