The Newton High School golf team finished fifth Thursday at the Buhler Invitational at the Hesston Golf Park.

Buhler won the tournament at 352, followed by Andale-Garden Plain at 354 and Goddard at 376. Newton had a team score of 400.

Taryn Torgerson of Buhler was top medalist at 75, followed by Dani Eck of Andale-Garden Plain at 79 and Tayler Hawkins of Andale-Garden Plain at 81.

Newton was led by Ginny Loeffler at 96, missing a medal by three strokes. Emily Epp followed with a 98. Alexa Salsbery shot a 100, followed by Lexi Pauls at 106, Chloe Denno at 107 and Larrah Bills at 109.

“Ginny and Emily were both able to continue their good play. Ginny finished tied for 13th; three strokes out of a medal,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “Emily is really improving her consistency and her putting. Alexa played well for most of her round but had a few big numbers that drove her score up. Lexi had a poor start going out in 59 but was able to make some grip changes and improved 12 strokes on her second nine shooting 47. Chloe and Larrah were both able to improve on their scores from Tuesday and are capable of much lower rounds. The team is improving but we are still wasting too many shots around the greens.”

Newton competes Thursday at the Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park.
