Doris E. Helfer, 90, passed peacefully away on Wednesday (Sept. 21, 2011) at St. Luke Living Center in Marion.

She was born on March 20, 1921, in Dodge City. She was the only child of Harvey and Verna Rhoads Marcum. She attended and was a graduate of Newton High School. She then attended Wichita State University, graduating with a degree in music education.

On Oct. 10, 1944, she married James Helfer. They made their home in Newton, where she was a homemaker and later worked for Hall’s Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician.

She was the organist for many years at First Methodist Church of Newton. After retirement, the couple moved to Marion, where they joined the Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Helfer and an infant son Danny Helfer.

She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Judi and husband David Burkett of Hesston, and Vicki and husband Kevin Hoffer of Marion; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation with family will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m.Tuesday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion. Committal service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
