The Newton High School girls’ golf team placed ninth Tuesday at the 13-team Salina South Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Manhattan won the tournament with a score of 314, followed by Maize at 329 and Hays at 341.

Newton had a team score of 399.

“Our team finished 26 shots lower than last year, but we didn’t play as well as we have been earlier this season,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “Alexa Salsbery and Emily Epp both turned in their personal bests. Alexa shot 91, 11 strokes better than last year at this meet. Emily shot 95 breaking her previous personal best by 15 strokes and improving 31 strokes from last year. Both Alexa and Emily putted well on the large, difficult greens.

“Chloe Denno and Larrah Bills played in their first 18-hole meet. They both struggled on their first nine (the back nine) but turned it around on the front bettering their turn scores by over 10 strokes (Chloe 50-61; Larrah 50-65). Ginny Loeffler and Lexi Pauls were disappointed with their rounds today. Ginny played well in spurts but struggled out of the sand traps and on the greens. Lexi Pauls hit her driver well, but lost a lot of strokes with her putting and chipping.”

Newton plays today at the Buhler Invitational at the Heston Golf Park.
