Otto R. Quiring passed away on Wednesday (July 27, 2011) at the age of 89.


Otto R. Quiring passed away on Wednesday (July 27, 2011) at the age of 89.

He was born on June 18, 1922, in Goessel, to Peter P. and Anna Reimer Quiring. Otto was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sarah Flaming Quiring in September 2001. He and Sarah were longtime residents of Newton and at the time of his death, he resided at Bethesda Home of Goessel.

Otto was a career farmer, farming in the Newton and Goessel areas and also as a custom wheat harvester from Oklahoma to North Dakota until he retired in 1985. He then began a second career and worked 25 years for the Agriculture Office of Harvey County as a fieldman. He was a member of Halstead Mennonite and Alexanderwohl Mennonite churches, where he loved to sing tenor in the choir and as a member of the Men’s Quartet. He also sang in the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus.

Otto served in various organizations, as a board member for the Harvey County School District 80 and the Board of the Newton/Goessel Co-Op where he enjoyed promoting the agriculture business.

He is survived by his three children, Karen Quiring of Bailey, Colo., Bob Quiring and his wife Sherry of Edmond, Okla., and Jerry Quiring and his wife Patsy of Wellston, Okla.; two grandchildren, Andrea and her husband Phil Chavanne of Brady, Texas, and Dustin Quiring of Edmond, Okla.; one great-granddaughter, Sophie Chavanne; and sisters Ruth Boese and Bertha Freisen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Otto was loved by many, and his generosity and caring for others will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Goessel. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m.

Graveside service will be at at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church Cemetery followed by a celebration of his life at 10 a.m at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

Memorials may be made to the Bethesda Home or to the Alexanderwohl Church in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Goessel.
