Middle schools sign co-op pactBy Mark SchnabelNewton KansanTOPEKA — The Kansas State High School Activities Association approved a cooperative agreement between Newton Chisholm Middle School and St. Mary’s School to combine athletic and other interscholastic activities for the 2011-12 school year.Activities covered include boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, football, scholar’s bowl, boys’ and girls’ tennis, boys’ and girls’ track, volleyball and wrestling.In addition, Janis Whitfield of Newton was appointed to the KSHSAA Hall of Fame selection committee.Wingnuts stop Fargo-MoorheadWICHITA — Wichita Wingnuts pitcher Junior Guerra went seven innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts, to Fargo-Moorhead 8-1 Monday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.Josh Horn went three for four hitting with a home run, three runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the Wingnuts on offense. Peter Barrows went two for three with two runs scored. Brent Clevlen hit a home run with two RBIs. Tyler Robbins also drove in two runs.Guerra improves to 6-2 for the season. Jared Simon and Matthew Nevarez each went an inning. Nevarez struck out two.Alex Caldera, 6-3, took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, lasting 3 1-3 innings. No Fargo-Moorhead player had more than one hit.Wichita is 37-31. Fargo-Moorhead falls to 30-38. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
