While attending Newton High School, Prochazka was involved in forensics and was the only debater in NHS history to have three state debate trophies.
As a part of the school newspaper staff, which earned an All-Kansas rating, he took second in news writing competition of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association’s Story of the Month contest, and he earned an excellent rating in new writing in the write off competition at the National Journalism Convention in which he placed his work in the top 15 percent of almost 2,000 entries. He also qualified for state in news design.
Prochazka was active in drama where he performed in three NHS plays and the NHS talent show. He also was a member of the Quill and Scroll and Journalism Honor Society. He also helped organize a service project in adopting a child during the Christmas holiday.
The scholarship was created by Jim and Barb Soth, Tim’s parents, for a NHS senior dedicated to journalism and fine arts. Tim was a 1979 graduate of Newton High School who enjoyed life and was dedicated to school involvement, especially fine arts and journalism.
Prochazka plans to attend Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky.
