As of 1:43 p.m. today,  a water main broke between Southeast Third Street and Country Club Drive on South Kansas in Newton.

Ed Bonham of the city water department said the city crews would leave the water on until they were able to dig down to the pipe. The water will then be off in the area for about two hours while the pipe is fixed.

The city expected the break to only affect a few customers.

The pipe break was likely due to heat. Materials expand in hot temperature and cause ruptures. These types of breaks are common in hot weather, Bonham said.
