What it is The amount of funding Health Ministries Clinic is requesting from the city for 2012. The agency’s total proposed budget for 2012 is about $1.3 million.

What it Pays for The community health center is at 209 S. Pine in Newton. It has a dental and medical clinic and accepts both insured and uninsured patients. According to the agency’s funding application, its mission is “to promote and improve the quality of life by providing holistic health-care services to the community’s medically underserved in the name and spirit of Jesus.”

Why it’s needed “Because Health Ministries serves largely low-income, uninsured residents, patient revenue covers just a fraction of the full cost of the medical and dental services,” the agency’s budget application stated. The agency served almost 2,300 Newton residents in 2010. A 2009 community survey revealed there still is an unmet need in the county: about 26 percent of those surveyed reported dental needs in the previous year they could not get treatment for; about 19 percent had unmet primary care needs; and about 16 percent were not able to obtain needed medications.
