Valdez signs with Shockers

WICHITA — Newton High School spring graduate Cristian Valdez signed a letter of intent to run track at Wichita State beginning with the 2011-12 school year.

As a senior, Valdez helped lead Newton to Class 5A state titles in the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. He was the 200-meter dash regional champion and the 100-meter dash champion in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I meet.

Valdez holds a personal best 10.91 in the 100-meter dash.

“We are looking forward to our men’s signing class joining Shocker track and field,” said Steve Rainbolt, director of Shocker track and field and cross country. “Sixteen new athletes will certainly make a positive impact on the Wichita State track and field program.”

Wichita State finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference in both men’s indoor and outdoor track.
