Newton resident Marcos Mendoza and dozens of volunteers are coordinating a districtwide box-top drive in an attempt to collect 100,000 box tops (redeemable for $10,000) to help supplement shrinking book and school supply budgets.
Mendoza and friends, including parents, teachers, businesses and other community members, have joined forces to implement the summer box-top drive, which will run through the beginning of the school year. Several schools already collect the box tops year ’round and will continue to do so, but the district-wide effort during the summer is meant to raise awareness of the Box Tops for Education program and encourage those who haven’t participated before to begin saving the box tops and labels, which are included on hundreds of items that most households use on a daily basis.
There are about 50 participating Box Top drop off locations throughout the community including: Acapulco Restaurant, Beck’s Burger, CJ’s Pancake House, Newell’s Truck Stop, Taco Tico, Drubers Donuts, Curtis C’s, Great Wall, Fox Ridge Restaurant, Montana Mikes, Mojos at Bethel College, Twisted Cow, Presbyterian Manor, Youthville, Bank of the West, Midland National Bank, Central National Bank, Citizen’s State Bank, First Bank, White Eagle credit Union, Prudential Real Estate, North and South Dillons stores, Wal-Mart, Meridian Grocery, Wal-Greens, Alco,  Tots N Tikes, Hutchinson Community College in the Axtell Center, Reba’s, ResCareFaith and Life Bookstore, Salem United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, First Church of God, Grace Community Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Koerner Heights Mennonite Bretheren Church, East Side United Methodist Church,  and USD 373 McKinley Administrative Office.
