World Language Spanish students from Newton High School attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2011 National Spanish Examinations.


 


French
Several Newton High School students performed well on Le Grand Concours National French language test. Dilan Winter, Brittany Stark, Erin Bergen, Yadira Porras and Rafael Mancera all received honors for their performance on the test.
Of the French II students taking the test, Winter ranked 12th in Kansas, Stark ranked 17th and Bergen ranked 15th.
This is the first time French II students from Newton have taken Le Grand Concours. A total of 142 French II students in Kansas took the test.
Newton French III students also did well. Yadira Porras ranked third in the state, as did Rafael Mancera, out of 67 French III students taking the test in Kansas.
The tests are timed, with approximately 20 minutes of listening and 40 minutes of reading, grammar and culture questions for each level. The tests are given across the United States and recognize state and national excellence. These five students were chosen for recognition by the national organization the American Association of Teachers of French.
The Newton High School French instructor is Nora Kelting.
Spanish
World Language Spanish students from Newton High School attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2011 National Spanish Examinations.
Students from NHS earned one gold, one silver and three bronze medals along with nine honorable mentions.
“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, national director of the exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 140,373 students participating in 2011.”
Students from Newton High School have a long history of high achievement on these exams. Newton High School Spanish instructors are Evelyn Gregg, Cheryl Loeffler and Crystal Sanhueza.
The National Spanish Examination is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Results on the National Spanish Exam were as follows:
Spanish level five: Maria Jantz — honorable mention. Spanish level three: Jared Janzen — gold; Katrina Gerbrand — bronze. Spanish level two: Alexandra Stucky — silver; Miranda Hanchett — bronze; Karis Sperling — bronze; Emma Bradley — honorable mention; Lauren Duerkson — honorable mention; Mark Kreider — honorable mention; Austin C. Regier — honorable mention; Austin T. Regier — honorable mention. Spanish level 1: Abigail Holler — honorable mention; Kate Jolliff — honorable mention; Cale Preston — honorable mention.
