Senior Knights drop two games

McPHERSON The Newton Senior Knights American Legion baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday during the regular-season finale in McPherson.

Newton fell to host McPherson 13-12 and Hays 21-13.

The losses snap a four-game winning streak for the Knights, 11-20. Scoring details were not reported.

Newton hosts McPherson at 6 p.m. today at Klein-Scott Field to open zone play.

Wingnuts stop Captains

SHREVEPORT, La. The Wichita Wingnuts re-signed pitcher Nick Singleton Tuesday.

Tuesday night, Singleton went 5 1-3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit, with two walks and seven strikeouts, to lead the Wingnuts to a 9-2 win over the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in American Association play in Shreveport, La.

The Wingnuts put up a three-spot in the first inning and never looked back.

Singleton left the team to pitch for Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League, where he was 1-1 with a 7.11 earned run average in three games. He struck out 16 batters in 12 2-3 innings.

The win improves Singleton to 9-0 in American Association play.

Peter Barrows went three for three hitting for Wichita, driving in three runs. Jorge Delgado added a two-run home run, along with a sacrifice fly for three RBIs. Josh Horn and Brent Clevlen both went two for five with a run scored and an RBI.

Steve Kent, 0-1, took the loss for the Captains. Bryan Sabatella broke the shutout with a two-run double in the sixth inning. The Captains were held to two hits in the game.

Wichita, 34-29, remains five games behind Gary SouthShore in the AA Central Division standings. Gary is on a five-game winning streak.

Wichita and Shreveport-Bossier wind up their series at 7:05 p.m. today.
