The Halstead Dragon wrestlers claimed a pair of top three medals Saturday in the Class 3-2-1A state tournament in Hays.

Norton won the team title at 131.5 points, followed by Hoxie at 97, Rossville at 84, Scott City at 81.5 and Eureka at 70.

Halstead finished 16th in the team standings with 39 points. Hillsboro was 35th with 12 points. Marion was 37th with 10 points.

Alex Thibault finished second at 140 pounds while Riley Soward placed third at 130 pounds.

Thibault finished 3-0 Friday to reach the finals, where he faced Kale Newell of Smith Center. Newell won the match 7-4.

Thibault ends the season 35-2.

Soward faced Brody Carroll of Marion in the consolation semifinals. Soward needed just 36 seconds to win by fall. In the consolation finals against Gage Younger of Ellis, Soward posted a 7-4 decision to place third.

Soward ends the season 36-2.

Marion’s Brody Carroll took a fifth-place medal for the Warriors.

Marion’s Carroll opened the day at 130 pounds in the second consolation round, posting a 17-6 major decision over Stetson Deets of Central of Burden.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Carroll stopped Michael Dustin of Phillipsburg to clinch a medal.

After Carroll’s match with Soward, Carroll downed Jacob Schroeder of Silver Lake 6-0.

Carroll finishes the season 42-6.

For Hillsboro, Justin King opened the day with a second-period pin of Cody Green of Waubaunsee in the second consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, King lost to Nathan Deeds of Goodland 6-4 in overtime. King ends the year 33-15.

At 125 pounds, Darren Mueller fell to Brent Juenemann of Decatur County by fall in the second period of the second consolation round, ending the season 31-20,

At 160 pounds, Aaron Bina was pinned by Derek Tyler of St. Mary’s in the third period of the second consolation round, ending the season 36-11.

At 171 pounds, Dylan Delk lost an 11-5 decision to Kyle White of Horton in the second consolation round, ending the season 29-13.
