The Newton High School boys’ basketball team didn’t show much confidence, and the Derby Panthers didn’t miss many shots as the Railers fell 61-35 Thursday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.

“That was our worst game of the year,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “We missed four layups in a row at the start of the game. We just didn’t play with confidence. Things just snowballed. They are very athletic. They took some frustrations out on us. They were the pre-season pick in the conference.”

Derby improved to 6-12, 5-6 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 2-17, 0-11 in Division I play.

Kyler Steadman led Derby with 16 points. Cameron Cornelius added 14.

Newton was led by Shelby Grosch with nine points, seven in the fourth quarter. Kyle Preston scored eight.

Derby was 25 of 48 shooting while Newton was 13 of 44.

Newton scored first on a Preston layup off the opening tip. Derby then went four for four from the field to take a 9-2 lead. After the time out, Derby scored 10 more points on five of seven shooting.
