The Campus Colts were able to punish the Newton High School boys’ basketball team from the outside in a 56-45 win Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Haysville.

Campus outscored Newton 27-9 from 3-point range. Brett Thomas hit seven 3-pointers, finishing the game with 26 points. Thomas was believed to have set a new school record for outside shooting.

“They shot it well,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “(Thomas) is a 21 percent field goal shooter. But he hit some shots early. I thought our guys started getting a hand in his face, but he still finished with seven threes. We’d make a comeback, and they’d drop another three. They just shot it. Early on, they had open looks. Once he started hitting, we guarded him pretty well, and he still was hitting them.”

Tied 12-12 after the first quarter, Campus pulled ahead 26-22 at the half and 38-31 after three quarters.

Newton got within five late in the game, but Chase Blaha hit a trey, followed by a Colton Flax layup. Campus was able to keep the Railers at bay down the stretch from the free throw line.

“We get it down to five, and another kid hits a three,” Cameron said. “Then they spread us out. They got a couple back-door plays on us. They shot it.”

Kyle Preston led Newton with 14 points. Jensen Kingsley scored 10 points.

Campus improves to 5-14, 2-9 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 2-16, 0-10 in AV-CTL I play.

Newton plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Derby.

“They are a very athletic team,” Cameron said. “They run a lot of slashing plays. They are very quick. We shot the ball well against them.”
