The Halstead High School wrestling team tied for eighth Friday and Saturday at the 24-team Class 3-2-1A regionals in Leon.


The Halstead High School wrestling team tied for eighth Friday and Saturday at the 24-team Class 3-2-1A regionals in Leon.

Caney Valley won the meet with 186 points, followed by Eureka with 146.5, Burlington with 132, Douglass with 103.5 and Chaparral with 99.

Among area schools, Halstead scored 70 points, followed by Remington with 36, Sedgwick with nine and Moundridge with four.

Halstead will send two wrestlers to the state meet, both winning regional titles.

At 130 punds, Riley Soward went 4-0 to win a regional title. Soward downed Michael Vander Lindon of Burlington 5-1 in the finals.

At 140 pounds, Alex Thibault finished 4-0 for the regional title, pinning Denver Ridgway of Bluestem in the finals.

Both Thibault and Soward advance to state with 32-1 records.

At 103 pounds, Ethan Hertzler finished 0-2. At 112 pounds, Adan Andrade finished 2-2. At 119 pounds, Summer Werner finished 1-2. At 125 pounds, Terrin Bradfield finished 2-2. At 171 pounds, Jerel Toler finshed 0-2. At 189 pounds, Tyler Henning finished 2-2. At 215 pounds, Jared Bean finished 2-2.

Nic Johnson of Sedgwick, who wrestles with Halstead in the regular season, finished in fourth place at 2-2 to qualify for state. Johnson enters state at 22-11.

Remington will send two wrestlers to state Luke Igo at 160 pounds and Cisco Soto at heavyweight. Igo finished 3-1 to take third, downing Skylar Morgan of Leon-Bluestem 4-0 in the consolation finals.

Soto finished 2-2 to take fourth, losing to Gus Farthing of Burlington in 3:35 in the consolation finals.

Igo enters state 18-15. Soto enters state 31-8.

At 119 pounds, Zach Thornburg finished 0-2. At 130 pounds, Shane Wallace finished 0-2. At 140 pounds, Kolby Burns finished 1-2. At 189 pounds, Corbin Mitchell finished 1-2. At 215 pounds, Robert DeBaun finished 1-2.

Moundridge, which wrestles with Hesston in the regular season, had one wrestler in competition Matt Emerson at 119 pounds, who finished 2-2 and missed a state berth by one win. Two of his losses came to Kasey Biddle of Central of Burden.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Busch-Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
