Any momentum the Newton High School boys’ basketball team may have gotten in Tuesday’s win over Valley Center was quickly taken away by Salina Central Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Ravenscroft Gym in a 55-27 Railer loss.

Newton was held to eight points in the first half, falling to 2-15, 0-9 in division play.

“That was a fine basketball team — athletic, quick,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “They made some fine defensive plays that resulted in some turnovers. That led to turnovers that shouldn’t have happened. (In the second half,) we didn’t let one turnover intimidated into making more. We settled down.”

Central was led by Shay Wooten with 13 points. Kyle McQuaige and Haushun Norwood each added 11 points.

Austin Vermillion led Newton with eight points.

Six Newton turnovers in the first 4:15 of play allowed Central to take a 9-2 lead and force a Railer time out. Central followed with an 8-2 run aided by two more turnovers. Newton finished the quarter with 10 turnovers, trailing 19-4.

Central made a 12-0 run to start the second quarter, broken on a pair of Kyle Preston free throws with 3:12 left in the half. A Norwood layup at the buzzer put Central ahead 33-8.

Newton nearly tripled its score in the third quarter as Central tripled its turnovers from two to six. Newton had 10 turnovers in the quarter, trailing 48-21. Newton was five of seven shooting in the quarter.

Central won the fourth quarter 7-6.

Newton plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Campus, a team which beat Newton by three earlier in the year.

“We’ve got three games left,” Cameron said. “We need to get at it next week.”
