Bethel spikers drop

second straight match

OTTAWA — The Bethel College volleyball team dropped its second match in three days, falling to Ottawa in five games Wednesday in Ottawa.

Ottawa won the match 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-11.

The Braves improve to 15-7, 12-4 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to 19-12, 10-5 in KCAC play. Bethel drops its fourth match in the last five, falling from second place to fourth in the KCAC. Bethel and Ottawa split the regular-season series one match each and five games each. Bethel does hold a +6 point differential in the series, giving the Threshers the third tie-breaker.

Kristen Hendrickson led Ottawa with 13 kills, followed by Becca Dinsmore with 13 and Brittany Bush with 10. Chrissie Jeanin set 40 assists. Dinsmore served four aces. Katie Jensen had 33 digs and five blocks.

For Bethel, Bethany Thiesen had 15 kills, followed by Whitner Hiebner with eight. Morgan Peters and Alyssa Schrag each set 17 assists. Addison Wolf and Hiebner each served two aces. Wolf had 28 digs. Maggie Stephenson and Thiesen each put down five blocks.

Bethel plays at 7 p.m. today at Saint Mary.

Thresher women

fall on road

LINDSBORG — The Bethel College women’s soccer team’s hopes for a first-round home playoff game were given a setback with a 2-1 loss to Bethany College Wednesday in Lindsborg.

Jordan Johnson scored two goals for the Swedes, 6-10-1 overall and 2-6 in KCAC play. Angelica Kaegi scored for Bethel in the 19th minute.

The Threshers fall to 4-9-3, 3-3-2 in KCAC play. Bethel ends the regular season at 6 p.m. Saturday at home against Sterling College. A win would move the Threshers into fifth place in the standings. A win, coupled with a McPherson loss to Kansas Wesleyan means tie-breakers would have to be used to determine the fourth, fifth and sixth seeds for the KCAC post-season tournament.

The top two teams — Ottawa and Kansas Wesleyan, receive byes into the semifinals. The third and fourth seeds get quarterfinal home games.

LINDSBORG — The Bethel College men’s soccer team posted a 1-1 tie Wednesday in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play in Lindsborg.

The tie puts Bethel at 5-9-2, 3-4-1 in KCAC play. Bethany is 5-9-2, 4-3-1 in KCAC play. With one game remaining, Bethel is in sixth place, the final cutoff for the conference post-season playoffs — one point ahead of both Tabor and Saint Mary. The Threshers hold the tie-breaker against both of those teams.

Bethel needs at least a tie against Sterling in the final regular-season home game at 8 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Stadium. Sterling is 2-13-2, 0-8 in KCAC play.

Markus Pitzko scored for Bethel. Gildaro Navarro scored for Bethany. Both goals were in the second half. Marcus Maust had eight saves for the Threshers. Logan Adams had four saves for the Swedes.
