The Newton High School boys’ soccer team took an early punch, staggered and was knocked out in a 2-0 loss to Bishop Carroll Thursday in the Class 5A regional finals at Fischer Field.

Newton ends the season 10-6-2. Carroll, 7-11, advances to the state quarterfinals Tuesday.

“Carroll is a quality squad,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “They played us tough the first game. We lost our composure in many aspects of the game. We created a lot of opportunities, but they have a fantastic keeper. Things just didn’t work out for us.”

Newton beat Carroll 1-0 earlier in the season at the Goddard Invitational.

Kolby Franklin scored both goals for Carroll. Steven Hamersky had eight saves in goal for the shutout win. Newton held an 11-4 advantage in total shots. Brandon Torres had two saves in goal for Newton.

The Railers were baited into numerous retaliation fouls, one of which led to Carroll’s first goal. The Railers were booked for five cards, including a red in the final 3:07. Fouls were 14-8 against the Railers, 9-3 in the second half.

“We did not handle adversity well,” Jantzi said.

Newton outshot Carroll 5-3 in the first half, but Carroll scored on its first two shots of the game — a direct kick by Franklin and a 15-yard shot by Franklin on a back pass from Cesar Ramirez.

Carroll packed in its defense late in the first half, giving the Railers possessions, but few quality shots.

Carroll made a couple of attacks forward in the early in the second half. Newton again hammered away up front from outside, but created few quality chances. Carroll went forward again in the closing minutes.

Newton had eight corner kicks but failed to convert.

Newton loses nine seniors off the varsity roster — Missael Reyes, Tanner Gatz, Noe Torres Jr., Brandon Torres, Garrett Schuck, Bryce Volk, Will Leake, Derek Welsch and Gonzalo Toribio. Thirteen underclassmen are listed on the varsity roster, including seven freshmen.

“I wish all the best for the seniors,” Jantzi said. “I hope they keep playing. We have a good squad coming back next year.”
