Once a donor has made the commitment to give blood, it is important to take a few simple steps to prepare and to help ensure a good donation experience, a news release said.
The Red Cross recommends:
• Getting a good night’s sleep.
• Eating a good breakfast or lunch before you donate.
• Drinking extra water and fluids to help replace the volume you will lose.
• Avoiding caffinated beverages.
• Eating iron-rich foods to boost your iron level.
Locally, donations can be made at the Newton Community Blood Drive from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1000 N. Main St.
Call (800) RED-CROSS ((800) 733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment today. Walk-ins also are welcome at this drive. All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 in Kansas with completed Parental Consent Form). New height and weight restrictions apply to donors younger than 19. Visit www.redcrossblood.org to learn more.
