The Burrton High School girls’ cross country team claimed the title of the Class 1A regional Saturday at Lake Afton.

Burrton won the meet with 19 points, followee by Pretty Prairie with 32, Otis-Bison at 38 and Macksville with 48. The top three teams qualify for state.

Burrton’s Kailey Gardner won the meet in 16:18. Teammate Maria Fernandez was third in 17:03. Elizabeth Simoneau was one spot out of medal contention, taking 11th in 18:11. Shelby Waite was 17th in 19:17.

The Burrton boys were led by Trae Lane, who finished fourth in 18:45 to qualify for state. Caleb Hurst was 21st in 20:57.

The state meet is Saturday at the Wamego Country Club.

Mound City Regional

MOUND CITY — The Goessel High School girls’ cross country team had just one runner in the girls’ race, Brittny Czarnowsky, who finished eighth in 17:51.27 to advance to state.

For the Goessel boys, Laird Goertzen finished third in 17:19 to advance to state.
