The Hesston High School volleyball team ended the season after a Class 4A sub-state semifinal loss Saturday at Hesston.

The Hesston High School volleyball team ended the season after a Class 4A sub-state semifinal loss Saturday at Hesston.

The Swathers opened with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-22 win over Augusta.

“In our quarterfinal match against Augusta, we played tentative and were a bit nervous. Augusta did not have a lot of strong hitters, but played very good defense and picked up a lot more of our hits than most teams we faced this season,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We have had trouble this season playing similar teams who continue to keep the ball in play and wait for us to make mistakes.

“In the third set, we jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but Augusta slowly closed the gap as we were unable to score much on our serve after that. Augusta closed it to 20-19, but we found a way to score a few more points to finish the match.”

In the semifinals, Hesston lost to Maize South 14-25, 25-18, 25-18.

“We knew Maize South would come back and step it up in the second set, and they played much better and made fewer mistakes than in the first,” Peters said. “We fell behind by a few points early and could never get the momentum back on our side. It was a similar story in the third set, where we let them get an early run, and couldn’t get it back.

“I felt that we played well in this match, despite the loss. Maize South was the best team that we have faced this season, and we stepped up to play them at a high level. I was extremely proud of the girls for their effort throughout. They left it out there on the court, and unfortunately, we just didn’t get enough breaks to have the match turn out in our favor.

Maize South went on to upset Circle in the finals 35-33, 26-24. The Mavericks enter state play 30-12. Hesston ends the season 32-8.

The Swathers lose seniors Dominique Chew, Keegan Kendrick, Ashley Martin, Rachelle McHegee, Mollie Nebel, Emily Schadler and Shelby Spencer.

“Overall, this season has been incredible,” Peters said. “We had an outstanding group of seniors, who were great role models in every way. Their leadership was terrific, and they made this a season to remember for everyone involved.

“This year’s group finished the season with 32 wins, which is the second-most of any volleyball team in the 40-year history of Hesston High School. They have set a high standard and a great example for the Swather Volleyball teams of the future.”
