The Halstead High School volleyball team pulled off an upset win and nearly got another one, finishing second Saturday at the Class 3A sub-state tournament in Conway Springs.

The Dragons opened play with a 25-15, 15-25, 26-24 win over host Conway Springs in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Halstead upset fifth-ranked (Kansas Volleyball Association, Class 3A) and top-seeded Sedgwick 18-25, 25-23, 25-23. The Cardinals ended the season 36-3.

In the championship match, Halstead fell to Garden Plain 15-25, 25-21, 25-21.

Garden Plain, 33-7, advances to the state tournament this weekend in Saline. Halstead ends the season 21-17.
