The Newton High School volleyball team is headed back to state after a long trip but short stay at the Class 5A sub-state tournament Saturday in Great Bend.

Newton opened with a 25-14, 25-8 win over Salina Central in the semfinals. In the finals, Newton downed Liberal 25-15, 25-11.

“We did a good job of siding out,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “We made it an emphasis of not letting the other team get on any big runs. The defense played strong throughout. Katie Loescher had a good night with some strong hits. Liberal had a big hitter, and we were able to get the block up against her. Emily Hiebert had a strong night hitting and setting. She finished the Liberal match with an ace. It was a solid overall performance for the entire team.”

The Railers are 34-7 and will play in the Class 5A state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Landon Arena, Topeka Expocenter. The Railers will be the second seed at the state tournament.

“Our girls were playing with a chip on their shoulder,” Dibbens said. “They came in feeling like they were under rated.”
