The Berean Academy cross country teams are set for a state return after top-three finishes Saturday at Mound City.

The Berean girls won the team title, topping Maranatha Academy 48-50. Northern Heights was third at 69, followed by Pittsbugh St. Mary’s-Colgan at 73 and Lyndon at 96. The top three teams advance to state.

Maranatha Academy won the boys’ title over Berean 34-42. Central of Burden was third at 66, followed by Northern Heights at 84, Humbolt at 137 and Lyndon at 149.

In the boys’ race, Berean claimed three medals. Berean’s Daniel Claassen won the meet in 16:25.39 (5,000 meters). Nick Hirsh was fifth in 17:25.69, followed by Steven Busenitz in eighth in 17:53.47.

Also running were Cory Sundquist in 26th in 19:03.61, followed by Isak Hart in 31st in 19:53.06 and Colt Broadie in 33rd in 19:59.08.

Claiming medals for the Berean girls were Wendy Busenitz in second in 17:24.03, followed by Lydia Newby in seventh in 17:56.37 and Emily Wiebe in eighth on 18:08.93.

Also running were Maria Entz in 24th in 19:43.44, Megan Reed in 26th in 19:54.75, Ashley Hall in 27th in 20:00.49 and Micaela in 29th in 20:06.88.

Peabody-Burns didn’t have enough runners for a team score, but did claim a pair if state qualifiers. For the Peabody-Burns girls, Lauren Pickens took sixth in 17:51.39 to advance to state.

For the Peabody-Burns boys, Sheldon Wiebe qualified for state with a sixth-place medal in 17:36.04.

Also running were Matthew Hiebert in 21st in 18:42.76, Seth Topham in 40th in 20:33.88 and Zachary Preheim in 41st in 20:34.81.

The state meet is Saturday at the Wamego Country Club.
