Kansas Republican House speaker Mike O’Neal says he’s seeking re-election, undeterred by an ethics inquiry and political setbacks.
The Hutchinson Republican planned to file Friday to run again. He said he expects to be re-elected and to lead the chamber next year.
For weeks, O’Neal’s critics have questioned whether he would run again. But O’Neal and his staff have consistently dismissed such talk.
Democrats forced the House to investigate O’Neal, an attorney, this year after he filed a lawsuit on behalf of businesses and other clients against a budgetary maneuver. But a special committee dismissed the complaint.
Moderate Republicans later bolted and worked with Democrats to pass a budget and an increase in the state’s sales tax.
