The Newton High School track teams each picked up a pair of medals Friday in the opening day of Class 5A competition at the state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium.


The Newton High School track teams each picked up a pair of medals Friday in the opening day of Class 5A competition at the state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium.

The Railer boys scored seven points and are in a tie for ninth place. Hays leads the field with 49, followed by Mill Valley at 27 and Gardner-Edgerton at 22.

Tyler Rambo finished fourth in the discus at 154-8. He had three foul throws in the shot put, the event he entered as the Class 5A leader.

Jacob Beebe picked up the Railers’ first medal of the meet, taking fifth in the high jump at 6-2.

Miguel Johns qualified sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing his heat in third place at 15.75. Johns followed with the second-best time in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 41.01. Johns missed the finals of the 200-meter dash by .03 seconds, finishing ninth in 23.20. Cristian Valdez was 12th in 23.28.

Tyler Robinson finished 14th in the 400-meter dash in 52.87.

Newton failed to finish the 4x100-meter relay.

The Railer girls claimed a pair of medals in the discus. Senior Erin Bradley finished in fourth at 124-6, followed by freshman Brooke Regier in fifth at 120-10.

After six events, the Railer girls are tied for 10th with Emporia, each with seven points. Mill Valley leads the girls’ competition with 32.5 points, followed by Gardner-Edgerton with 28 and Salina South with 21.

Andrea Baron qualified in the finals of the 300-meter low hurdles, finishing eighth overall in 49.18. Riley Roberts was 12th in 50.06.

Katelin Gaeddert qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash in sixth overall at 26.71.

The Newton girls failed to qualify for the finals of the 100-meter high hurdles with Roberts finishing 10th overall in 16.80, followed by Baron in 11th in 16.94.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Carly Willis, Katie Loescher, Roberts and Gaeddert missed qualifying by .42 seconds, taking ninth in 50.82.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Gaeddert, Emily Runge, Baron and Loescher finished 13th in 4:18.79.

Erin Loeffler finished 15th in the girls’ 3,200-meter run in 12:32.01.

Maria Jantz failed to clear a height in the pole vault.

The competition concludes today.
