Shockers win MVC
opening game

WICHITA — Outhit 8-4, the top-seeded Wichita State baseball team opened play in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a 6-2 win over Missouri State Tuesday at Eck Stadium.
Wichita pitcher Jordan Cooper went the distance for the win, improving to 10-2. Cooper allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Missouri State’s Mike Kickham, 4-9, went six innings in the loss, allowing six runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
“I thought Missouri State was a very tough opponent tonight,” WSU coach Gene Stephenson said. “I thought that (Missouri State pitcher Mike) Kickham had a high-quality arm on the mound and was really difficult to handle. I think we were fortunate enough to rattle him a little bit and were able to score some runs in the fifth inning and then got the big two-run homer in the sixth. Jordan Cooper was outstanding. I don’t think he felt like he had his best stuff or the kind of stuff he had against them the last time, but this guy can pitch. He’s a bulldog and a great competitor and a great student-athlete, as well.”
Missouri State scored a run in the top of the first. Wichita State came back with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Wichita State scored three runs in the fifth on wild pitches. Will Baez added an RBI double.
Brett Bascue added a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Bascue finished the game two for two hitting with two runs scored.
Kevin Medrano went three for four for Missouri State, scoring both runs. Medrano  hit a solo home run in the first inning. Keenen Maddox hit an RBI double in the top of the sixth.
Wichita State plays at 7:30 p.m. today.
