The Wichita Wild needed a 21-0 fourth quarter to edge the San Angelo Stampede Express 42-35 Saturday in Indoor Football League play at Hartman Arena.
The win was the third straight for the Wild, now 8-3. San Angelo falls to 7-4.
Wichita running back Darius Fudge rushed for 26 yards on 15 carries, scoring two touchdowns. Fudge scored the game-winner with 1:31 remaining in regulation.
Quarterback Dixie Wooten hit eight of 19 passes for 81 yards with two interceptions and two touchdowns. Fudge also rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown. Clinton Solomon had three catches for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
San Angelo quarterback TyJuan Manning hit 15 of 39 passes for 153 yards with two interceptions and five touchdowns. Manning also led the Stampede Express in rushing with four carries for 28 yards. Johnathan Ferguson caught six passes for 77 yards and three touchdowns. Chris McKinney caught three passes for 36 yards and two scores.
Aided by three turnovers on Wichita’s first three possessions, San Angelo led 21-14 at the half and 35-21 after three quarters. Wichita scored early in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard Fudge run. A fumble set up a four-yard pass from Wooten to Solomon.
The Wichita defense got the ball back on a Donta Moore interception, but couldn’t convert. A missed field goal for the Stampede Express was returned 41 yards by Randy Kelly to the San Angelo 4-yard line. Fudge scored two plays later, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Wooten to Solomon.
The Wichita defense held San Angelo on downs at the Wild 14 with five seconds in regulation.
Tanis Ready had eight total tackles for the Wild. Bethel grads Brandon Kaufman and James McCartney each had four. Kaufman had a pass break-up. McCartney had a sack. Kelly returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter.
With three games remaining, Wichita is a half a game behind Sioux Falls for first place in the United Conference, Central West Division. Wichita gets a week off and faces the Central North Division leading Green Bay Blizzard June 5 in Green Bay.
