Municipal Pool: Municipal Pool in Athletic Park opens Saturday. Times are 1 to 5 p.m. daily and 7 to 9 p.m. weekdays. Ticket books are available.

Swimming lessons — Starting June 7 for all ages. There are group classes with eight levels of instruction. Lessons can be taken at the Newton Activity Center Pool or the Newton Municipal Pool. Morning, evening or Saturday lessons are available. Private lessons also are offered. For more information, call 283-7330.

Discovery Camp — 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 12. The center has planned fun-filled days with a wide variety of activities including swimming, library days, craft projects, Adventure Day trips and more for children ages 5 through 12. The program is a state-licensed day care and a Social and Rehabilitation Services-approved program. Discovery Camp will participate in the summer food program. Registration packets and medical release forms are required and are available at the Newton Activity Center front desk.

Adventure Days — Day trips for children ages 5 through 12. Trips include: May 27, Sedgwick County Zoo; June 3, Pratt Fish Hatchery and Museum; June 8, Kansas Wetlands Education Center in Great Bend; June 17, Smoky Valley Railroad and Russell Stover Outlet in Abilene; and June 18 Day Trip to East Lake and Fishing Derby. Future trips include Rock River Rapids in Derby, Dillon Nature Center in Hutchinson, Wichita Children’s Theatre, Salina Water Park, Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita, Wichita Wingnuts Baseball Game and more. The program is a state-licensed day care and an SRS-approved program. Registration packets and medical release forms are required.

Pre-School Play Time — 4 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays, June 1 through 22. Let your 3- to 6-year-old’s imagination come alive. Participants will play games, do arts and crafts and play with parachutes. Parents are welcome to participate. You can sign your child up for one day or all days.

Women’s Self Defense Class — Noon to 3 p.m. June 5. Learn how to defend yourself when someone is trying to attack you. With guidance of NRC Tae Kwon Do instructor Dany Monares, you will gain self-confidence and learn effective techniques to defend yourself against an attacker.

Swim lesson instructor/aide course —1:30 to 5 p.m. June 7 and 8. This course provides training for those who wish to assist or teach swimming lessons. Swim instructor/aides receive training from NRC Aquatics staff in swim instruction methods and theories. Water safety skills and first aid instruction are included. For ages 14 through 17. Registration deadline is Thursday.

Free Hershey Track and Field Day — 10:30 a.m. June 7. The Hershey’s Track and Field Youth Program is a nationwide program conducted by area schools and recreation facilities. Open to boys and girls in the 9 to 14 age group. No special equipment or uniforms are needed. If your child likes to run, jump or throw, sign up today. Entry forms are available at the front desk at NRC.

Munchkin Tennis — 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 7 through 17. Participants join high school and college tennis players for instructional tennis lessons. NRC provides racquets and balls. For ages 4 to 6 and ages 7 to 9.

Youth Tennis — 9 to 9:45 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 7 through 17. Participants will learn various tennis fundamentals through instruction and match play. Participants must provide their own racquet. NRC provides balls. For ages 10 to 12 and ages 13 and 14.

NRC/Fox Ridge Junior Golf Clinic — 8 to 10 a.m. June 7 through 11. Participants learn the fundamentals of golf. Join Fox Ridge staff for a week filled with time on the driving range, practice green and on the golf course. Enjoy the final “play day” on the course followed by lunch and an awards ceremony. NRC provides clubs and balls if needed. For ages 7 through 18. Registration deadline: June 4.

Strong Girls Aquacise and Fitness Training For Teens — 11 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 8 through July 1. This class includes a variety of activities and sports. The girls will learn how to combine fitness, teamwork and fun for healthy life skills. For ages 11 through 16.

Scrapbooking Crop — 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 15 and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 16. These sessions are when you can get your scrapbooking work done. Bring any projects and photos you want to work on. Cutters and other tools will be available for your use. You will find plenty of help to get you going and sticking to your projects. For ages 16 and older.

Summer Activity Center Pool Public Swim Hours — Noon to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Free open gym — Anyone may bring a basketball and shoot some hoops in NRC’s gymnasium during business hours.

Climate-controlled indoor walking track — The NRC gym has a walking track (12 laps equal one mile) available for walking at anytime during business hours. Use of the track is free.
