  • Paul Brunson, president of Taxserv Inc., an H & R Block franchisee, has acquired the company-owned location in the Central National Bank building at Broadway and Main streets.

He purchased the business from H & R Block in December.

He has consolidated the former Wal-Mart location in south Newton into the downtown office.

In addition, he plans to add business services including bookkeeping and accounting under the H & R Block brand.

Brunson, a resident of Wichita, has a lifelong connection with the area as the grandson of Emma Funk from the Hillsboro community and whose family had a farm in western Harvey County for 30 years.

“I grew up eating lots of great Mennonite food at family gatherings and worked summers in the oil fields north of Dutch Avenue out near our farm,” he said.

Following graduation from The University of Kansas with a master’s degree in business administration, Brunson worked for IBM in Kansas City before returning to the Wichita area to start a technology company.

He also ran the other family businesses in oil, agriculture and other investments after his father died in 1995.

He brings 20-plus years of business experience to Newton and looks forward to getting to know more about the Newton community after the rush of tax season.

The company has hired 16 people for the downtown location for this tax season and will be open year-round on a scaled-down schedule during the off-season.
