Kansas Republicans now have a candidate for state treasurer. Sedgwick County Treasurer Ron Estes filed Friday for the office, becoming the first GOP hopeful in the race. Estes, of Wichita, was elected in 2008 to his second four-year term in the county office and said he would bring that experience and a business background to state government. Estes said he believes he can make the treasurer’s office more efficient, even though he doesn’t have major issues with how Democrat Dennis McKinney has managed it. “Some of it is just a fresh pair of eyes coming in,” Estes said. McKinney, a former Kansas House minority leader, was appointed treasurer in late 2008 after Republican incumbent Lynn Jenkins was elected to the U.S. House.
